Service your car
Your car should be regularly serviced and maintained.
Known mechanical and other problems
Have checks done and repair the known problems.
Fluid Level Checks
Check that fluid levels are up to the specified levels. These include:-
- Oil
- Coolant
- Brake fluid
- Power steering fluid
- Wiper fluid
Tyre Checks incl. spare wheel
Check condition of tyres and replace worn out tyres.
Do not forget the spare wheel.
Check tyre pressure. Check that it conforms with the acceptable levels specified by the manufacturer in the Car Manual. Also check by the front driver’s door for the specifications.
Also check tyre pressure on the journey as loads and passenger weights may have a bearing on the tyre pressure.
Wheel Alignment
Check wheel alignment regularly. Poor status causes quick uneven tyre wear and increase in petrol consumption due to wheel drag.
Battery Checks
Ensure that the battery has enough strength and is performing well. Check battery water levels.
Vehicle Loads.
Ensure that vehicle load weight is well balanced on either side.
Wiper Checks
Replace worn-out wiper blades. Worn out wiper blades will not clear the windscreen as well as should be the case. Replace with good quality brands which are more long lasting. This way you do not have to replace regularly and you will make savings in the long run.
Lights – checks
Check that all lights are working. These include headlights, brake lights, indicator lights, spot lights and hazard lights.
Brake checks
Brakes should be checked at all times.
Only use the handbrake for stopping the vehicle only in exceptional situations and this should not be the norm.
Suspension Systems – Checks
The suspension system of the vehicle should always be checked.
